OH, Happy Thanksgiving ! Did you celebrate with the family ?

Wow, he must have had an iron will to resist temptation 😂 These two would have cleaned the plate in 5 seconds flat. They can't even eat in peace without getting set on fire by the intensity of their doggy gaze. You should see Sudu going at it with a bowl of papayas. She doesn't eat them like a normal dog—she inhales them like a vacuum cleaner. No chewing necessary. Just straight consumption mode.

Hmm, maybe that's just the Everglades zone? I even heard the raccoon population was dropping a few years back. We have only one species of bear here (Sri Lankan sloth bear). Apparently, they might be one of the first species of large carnivores the world will lose in the future. Yeah, unfortunately, the world isn't big enough for all of us anymore hahaha.

Yup, but doing that in the middle of a highway is a bad idea. Surprised Raja hasn't been in a mishap yet, though his other colleagues can be a bit violent—like flipping over vehicles and charging. Probably because it runs through Yala National Park in one zone. You can sometimes see leopards hanging out on some trees close to the highway, just watching traffic pass by like they're spectators.

Yeah, she was only just barely a mewling little tuna bun with squinty little eyes back then. Used to take them both on walks around the yard. They couldn't be left unattended—too many predators around. Might have brought her up to my face once and quoted "to be or not to be," and she had this look of absolute puppy contempt and shivered a bit in the palm of my hand—then left me a little present in the form of a squirt of forbidden toothpaste hahaha. I thought fair enough, that's surely one way to show disagreement 😂

One time a pair of eagles landed on our neighbor's roof and was eyeing them (apparently this was the first time they'd ever seen them land on a roof—they tend to only roost around the mountain up top). While these two idiots were sleeping belly-up without a care in the world. Probably would've got snatched if we weren't home to intervene.

Both are about a year and 5 months old now. Brownie might be about a week older than Sudu, since they were both found on different days. Yeah, Brownie's back to her old self. Wasn't as bad as last time when at one point she was releasing what looked like raw chicken liver—thought that was part of her intestines or something. Even after the initial recovery, it took her a couple of weeks to fully bounce back to normal energy levels.

How old was Husky when he passed? And honestly, how did you manage that level of discipline with him? Because these two have absolutely zero impulse control whatsoever. Was it training from puppyhood, or was he just naturally well-behaved? I clearly failed somewhere along the way with mine😂

Just noticed that part of my last message from the 20th wasn't sent. Is there a word limit here ? Guess I just sent it to her. Yeah, Sudu, the little git, absolutely LOVES affection and showing dominance – especially if she's the only one getting it 😂 Jealousy central. When she was a small sausage-bun-sized toddler, one of the FIRST times she took a crap was directly in the palm of my hand – and she maintained unbroken eye contact the entire time. Should've known right then she'd be the problem child 💀? Oh, sickness in the family and dealing with their volatility (which is constant) and a bunch of other issues piling up. Brownie ended up getting sick with diarrhoea earlier this week, but it seems to have cleared up now. Thankfully, it wasn't as bad as the last time she got sick, when all she was ejecting was straight-up blood... that was absolutely terrifying. Vet visit, medication, the whole ordeal. She's okay now though. Some days are worse than most. C'est de la vie, eh ?

Haha, —these two delinquents would destroy anything they could get their paws on. Bedding, toys, you name it, it would only be a shredded pile within 3 days tops. So we stopped giving them toys altogether. A few days ago Brownie ATE part of a plastic torch handle. When they were pups they'd use jump up and grab on to clothing, try to bring me down to the floor so they could lick my face or bite, like a pair of shoebox-sized wolves taking down a deer. My fault entirely since I somehow taught them to go for the face in a fight and it backfired spectacularly. Now they think biting my ears and nose is a sign of affection 💀

Were you coach potato when you were a kid?

Unfortunately we don't have a Florida Man equivalent here, just tales of degeneracy of people in Colombo and people around the coast being a bit... much. Maybe some drunk uncles' shenanigans in the streets hahaha. But yeah, the overpopulation is affecting not just people but other animals too. The government did a survey and apparently there is one monkey for every 4 people here—one of those species that made human encroachment a pro instead of a con.

Oh, thought bears were rare in Florida? Read somewhere that all those alligators and pythons have been clearing out all the prey animals. Yeah, you can hunt peacocks here too since they have been decimating farmers' crops. Raja is definitely the head honcho of that stretch of the road, like a crooked custom agent—would stick his trunk in, and take stuff if you don't pay the fee. Apparently there are a few other elephants that have started mimicking him.

We have two pelicans that blew inland in a storm and have now taken up permanent residence in Kandy Lake because it's chockfull of fish since fishing is banned there due to its proximity to the Temple of the Tooth. And a gigantic monitor lizard that prowls the lake, size of a small crocodile—seen her take down a few cormorants and ducks a few times. Can't relate even though I'm a Buddhist hahah—love my protein.

Ah, seems like you're gonna have to learn to live with that disappointment 😂

The girls definitely get lonely when their favorite chew toy (me) isn't around. Still got the receipts of affection - scars and torn pants all over 😂 Do your dogs destroy clothes too, or is that just my chaos gremlins?

I can relate to that feeling though.Like Singapore - everyone seems to love it from the outside - all that glamour and air of modernity - but once you shift your gaze to the people, they all feel like they're walking around with a noose around their neck while smiling. Was that your experience when you visited, or am i projecting ? There's something unsettling about performative happiness in overly "perfect" places.Though happy might be a bit of strong word when it comes to the big apple 😂

Yeah, there are merits to keeping stereotypes alive. Everyone's heard tales of the legendary Florida Man 😂 What's the most absurd Florida Man story you've actually witnessed or heard locally?

Oh boy, you have NO idea how much those hairy buggers (monkeys) are despised here in Asia 😂 There was this one time a monkey saboteur broke into the main power station to... ahem... monkey around, and somehow single-handedly took down power for most of the island by getting himself electrocuted 💀 The overpopulation got so bad the government actually lifted the ban on hunting them! They're coordinated terrorists in fur coats.

Leopard attacks are pretty rare here - the only really notable one being the Maneater of Punanai (a leopard that terrorized the eastern Sri Lanka region in the early 1920s, killed somewhere between 20-30 people before finally being hunted down by colonial hunters - became a local legend, still talked about). But honestly? It's the elephants here that are the real kickers 😂

We even have a Highwayman Elephant - his name's Raja - who straight-up blocks a highway and collects "tolls" in the form of food from passing vehicles. Just stands there, won't move until you hand over bananas or sugarcane. Drivers know the drill at this point 💀 Do you have any "local wildlife legend" stories in Florida? Like a specific gator everyone knows about?

Wait, the smell of charring meat has NEVER opened a hole in the pit of your stomach? Ever? Not even a little temptation? That's some serious willpower 😂 What was it that made you and your sisters decide to go vegetarian after seeing those videos - was there one specific video that did it, or just everything accumulated till you couldn't unsee it? I'm genuinely curious because that's a huge commitment, especially as kids.

Sudu was the well-behaved angel and Brownie was the absolute hellion when they were itty-bitty puppies - but their respective personalities took a complete 180 shift once they grew up a bit.

Yeah, Sudu the little git absolutely LOVES affection and showing dominance - especially if she's the only one getting it 😂 Jealousy central. When she was a small sausage-b

Oh – and sorry for the super late reply. I got hit by turbo depression these last few days ...

Don't be in such a rush to meet him 😂 I'm sure he'll want you to take your sweet time getting up there haha

Every time I come home it's a full hero's welcome - like I had to wrestle a leopard and fight my way through enemy lines just to bring home groceries 😂 Though I could definitely do without the two furry terrors trying to push me down the stairs in their excitement haha

How long has it been since you last visited New York? Do you miss it at all ?

All those TV shows and movies make it seem like you Floridians wrestle alligators after breakfast for exercise, then strangle a Burmese python or two on the way to work for good measure 😂

We've got a saying about monkeys here that translates to: "Once the door is open, it's not YOUR house anymore - it's THEIRS!" (cue Soviet anthem) 💀 Not too long ago the government had to intervene because monkey troops were launching full-scale raids on houses in certain residential areas. They're coordinated, shameless, and have zero respect for property rights.

Kandy's in the highlands, so the wildlife is different from coastal areas. Most worrisome things here are poisonous snakes, wild boars, and leopards - though leopards aren't found in my specific area. Mostly we get peacocks, porcupines, and maybe a deer once in a blue moon if you're lucky. The lowlanders though? They have to deal with angry elephants and crocodiles, which sounds significantly worse.

Wait, you've NEVER had BBQ?! WHAT?! 😱 How does that even happen living in the SOUTH?! That's like living in Italy and never eating pasta, or living in France and never having bread 😂 Is that a vegetarian thing, or just never got around to it?

Speaking of - you've been vegetarian since childhood. Was that a family decision or personal choice?

Yeah, Sudu went through this phase where she absolutely REFUSED to eat unless she was hand-fed by yours truly. Little git would park her keister right next to her food bowl, slowly wag her tail, and give me these hopeful puppy eyes like she was starving (she wasn't). I wouldn't have minded except she deliberately ate as slowly as physically possible. One bite... then a few licks behind my ear... then she'd stare at me with pure joy for a solid minute... then another bite. Wash, rinse, repeat. Little **** would stretch this out for anywhere from 30 minutes to a full HOUR 💀

Even Brownie tried copying her antics for a while, but being the perpetually hungry girl she is, she gave up pretty quickly because it took too damn long. Sudu's mostly gotten over that phase now... emphasis on mostly. She still tries it occasionally when she's feeling particularly princess-like 😂

I can't imagine having to constantly clarify "No, that's my TWIN, we're different people" 😂 Does she get annoyed about it too, or have you both just accepted it as an inevitable thing?
